Depakote Extended Release tablets?

I was recently put on Depakote ER tablets, I'm on 750mg/day.
I wasn't given much reason as to why i'm on them, just mood swings and migraines.

One of the side effects listed is "weight change" and i'm assuming it means weight GAIN?
I've already put on a good 7 pounds, but I hate it! It's only been 6 weeks....!

Is any one else on this medication, and if so, what did you change to not gain weight? I haven't changed anything in my diet/lifestyle yet I'm still putting on weight...help please.
oh also -- I got my BMR which said I'm supposed to eat 1620 calories a day. I keep a food log and get around 1400 each day. I'm STILL gaining. I eat a balanced diet. ='(

You will do what's best for you, but if it was me, I would go back to my doctor and just say no.

Have you been given appointments or instructions for liver function tests with the Depakote? Because there is a chance it can severely damage your liver and they're supposed to be checking that every 4-6 weeks.

And yes -- doctors and researchers say Depakote should have only "mild" weight gain of ten pounds or less, but I have talked to hundreds of patients over the Internet or some I know personally over the last ten years that I have been writing about mental health and all of them have gained at least 30 pounds on Depakote. I gained 60. It's not uncommon to hear of 100 lb weight gains. HOWEVER, that's generally people with severe bipolar mania who are on a ton of other drugs, too, and are just generally very ill.

The liver function tests alone kind of freaked me out and the other side effects of Depakote drove me to herbal remedies for my bipolar disorder.

You'll make the right choice for you, but if it was me or anyone in my family I'd just say no to Depakote.
