Part of the acai craze started when "Dr. Oz" was on the Oprah show and mentioned them in passing. Manufacturers latched onto this and started touting it as the miracle fruit "as seen on Oprah" (these are the ads you see everywhere on the Internet that promise loss of "25 pounds of stomach fat by following this simple golden rule", which turns out to be an ad for acai and colon cleansing).
Oprah is now suing several of these companies for claiming she recommends the product.
